Charles (Chuck)'s Story
Yes, as soon as I could afford the ticket, I was in the Bahamas working at a 40,000 acre sugarcane plantation in a number of roles, until '72. Drove big rig over-the-road from '73 to '78. I then was hired at Union Pacific in KC as a switchman/brakeman, working my way up to conductor and finally, engineer. Transfered to Salina, Ks. in '96 and retired in 2006 on a disability retirement. 28 years of jumping on and off rolling boxcars and riding the rails takes a toll on some of us, and the cumulative trauma put me out to pasture.
Married wife, Deborah (Dennis) in '76 and we had six kids, 3 and 3, and now have five grandsons and a grandaughter, ...Expand for more
and still have 4 kids to marry off! Our middle son, Charles,III, leaves 28Dec. for a tour in Iraq with the 320th MP CO, training Iraqi military and civilian police units.
The wife and I hope to move soon back to the Bahamas to live out our retirement years. Maybe we'll see Connie Martin if she fishes the Bahamas Billfish Tournament, coming over from Marathon, FL. Too cool, Connie, you beat me to the tropical dream! (Kids have a tendency to get in the way of such things.)
Have been in contact with David Garmoe, now living in Ozark, Ark., and we're wondering why no 40th class reunion? We may need wheelchairs and walkers if we wait until 50th!
